Summary:
আমেরিকার কানেকটিকাটে ছিল হ্যাংক নামে এক ইঞ্জিনিয়ার। একদিন এক সহকর্মীর সাথে ঝগড়ার সময় সহকর্মী তার মাথায় দিলো এক রদ্দা। সেই ঘা খেয়ে হ্যাংক গেল অজ্ঞান হয়ে। জ্ঞান ফিরলে সে দেখলো, আরে, কোথায় কানেকটিকাট? এ তো দেখি ষষ্ঠ শতাব্দী (৫০০-৬০০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ), রাজা আর্থারের রাজত্ব! কোন এক জাদুবলে সে সময়ের মারপ্যাচে ষষ্ঠ শতাব্দীতে এসে পড়েছে।
উদ্ভট জামাকাপড়ের জন্য তাকে মৃত্যুদন্ড দেয়া হলো। পরদিন তাকে পুড়িয়ে মারা হবে। ভাগ্যক্রমে পরের দিন ছিল সূর্যগ্রহণ। সে তা জানতো, আর সেই পুরনো কৌশল অবলম্বন করে (কলম্বাসের মতো), সূর্যকে গায়েব করে দেবার নাম করে নিজেকে প্রবল প্রতাপশালী এক জাদুকর হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করলো। শুধু তাই না, সে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর পদ দাবি করলো। বাঁচার জন্য তাকে সবই দেয়া হলো, আর সে শুরু করলো ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হিসাবে তার গোপন কাজকর্ম।
এক পর্যায়ে সে আর রাজা আর্থার ছদ্মবেশে সাধারণ মানুষের জীবনযাপন দেখতে বেরুলো। ঘুরতে ঘুরতে এক পর্যায়ে দাস-ব্যবসায়ীরা তাদেরকে দাস হিসেবে বন্দী করলো। সেখানে গ্যাঞ্জাম বাধানোর পরে তাদেরকে ফাঁসিতে ঝুলানোর ব্যবস্থা করা হলো, সময়মতো রাজার লোকজন এসে পড়ায় সে যাত্রা জানে বাঁচলো।
পুরো গল্পই এরকম আরো অনেক মজার মজার অভিযানে ভরা। অভিযানগুলো শুধু মজারই না, সেই সাথে এগুলো মধ্যযুগীয় সমস্যাগুলোও তুলে ধরেছে। যেমন, নিরীহ মানুষজন বিনা বিচারে বছরের পর বছর জেল খাটে যেখানে রাজা-রাণীর কোনো হুঁশই নাই এ ব্যাপারে, আবার কোথাও মানুষজন রাজতন্ত্র হঠিয়ে গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য সংগ্রাম করে - এরকম আরো নানান রকম মজার মজার ঘটনা। রাজতন্ত্রের হাস্যকর নিয়মকানুনের বিরুদ্ধে মার্ক টোয়েন তার স্বভাবজাত ব্যঙ্গবিদ্রূপ দিয়ে লিখেছেন। আসলে লেখক রাজতন্ত্রের বিরুদ্ধে অনেক গল্পেই লিখেছেন, যেমন আরেকটি গল্পের উদাহরণ দেয়া যায় 'The Prince and The Pauper'।
চার্চ দেখলো, এ তো ভারী উৎপাত! হ্যাংক আর রাজা তো দেখি আমাদের প্রভাব বিস্তারে বাধা সৃষ্টি করছে! তারা কৌশলে হ্যাংক আর তার পরিবারকে দূরে ভ্রমণে পাঠিয়ে দিলো। এদিকে রাজা আর্থার মারা পড়লো রাণীর প্রেমিকের হাতে। দেশের এই অবস্থায় চার্চ সমন জারি করলো হ্যাংকের বিরুদ্ধে। হ্যাংক এক গুহার মধ্যে তার পুরোনো বন্ধুদের নিয়ে আস্তানা গাড়লো। তারা ইলেকট্রিক তারের বেড়া, কামান, গুলি এগুলো নিয়ে নাইটদের সাথে যুদ্ধ করলো। হ্যাংক আহত হয়ে শয্যাশায়ী হলো। এরপর জাদুকর মার্লিন তাকে জাদু দিয়ে ১৩০০ বছরের জন্য ঘুম পাড়িয়ে দিলো।

The story is a first-person narrative, narrated by Hank who is an engineer of Connecticut. He faints after getting a blow from a colleague in the head. When he wakes up, he finds himself back in 6th century at King Arthur's reign. That is, somehow he got transported through time.
He was sentenced to death by burning at stakes for his different dress-up. Luckily, the next day was a solar eclipse. Using the solar eclipse trick (like Columbus), he proved himself as a powerful magician. He became 'The Boss' and was appointed as the prime minister. He started to develop different types of engineering activities like telegraph, electricity etc.
After restoring the fountain of a holy place, he and the king set out in disguise to see the condition of common people. They were caught up as slaves, and later were sent to gallows. However, in due time was saved by the royal guards.
The story narrates such many more interesting adventures throughout the book. Such adventures not only are full of fun, but also reveals medieval age problems. For example, innocent people being punished without proper judgement where the ruling king doesn't even bother to know about it, people fighting for democracy by ousting monarchy and many such things. Mark Twain stood against the funny aspects of monarchy through his usual elegant satires. Actually such satires against monarchy is also observable in his other story 'The Prince and The Pauper'.
The church, finding Hank and the king as a threat to the religion, tricks Hank to sail far away, while they ruled out 'interdict'; thus, common people took them as enemies. Hank built fortification around a cave and survived the attack by the knights. But he was wounded and was set to sleep for 1300 years by the evil magician Merlin.
The story mocks at monarchy (kingship), superstitions, medieval-age slaveries, gullibility and churches. While visiting the countryside in disguise, King Arthur felt the need to abolish slavery. People had been too gullible to believe in magical tricks. Churches were oppressive against opinions and free-thinking.
Interestingly, this book led to time travel themes that prominent writers later adopted in their novels. E.g., 'The Time Machine' by H. G. Wells.
